Dark Winter: Still-Life

February 25, 2018 Maxine Greer
Wintersweet

Wintersweet

From the decay of winter the fruits of spring are slowly beginning to emerge.  I'm finally completing a new mini world "Wintersweet".  The first signs of spring are starting to appear with bright yellow flowers emerging from dead looking branches and from the mulch of earth the delicate heads of Snowdrops create a welcome brightness.

Woodland floor Snowdrops

Sticking with the darkness of the winter months I have experimented with staging the sculptures within a dark environment.  These small sculptures which scale between 5-8cm wide and 10cm in height appear elevated against the black. Spot-lit and centre stage.

I recall the work of the 17th Century Spanish painter Juan Sanchez Cotan with his suspended still-lifes of fruit and vegetables, each held up with string against a dark background.

The challenge of how to present these small sculptures remains ongoing, see in my Gallery pages for more woodland floor images.  I would be interested to know your thoughts on these new dark world versions?  Large photographic artist prints soon available in my shop. Which is your favourite?

If you haven’t seen my testimonial page, on it you’ll find feedback from some of the people who have invested in my collection in Kota. However today I wanted to dig a little deeper in to the story of one of my very first customers of the Kota collection.
